Skimming 101: Everything You Need to Know to Keep You and Your Money Safe

Safeguard your money from ATM fraud, skimming

You do do everything to keep your bank account safe. You don’t reuse passwords and are careful about not shopping on sketchy websites. Scammers are getting smarter and are using an old tactic done through an ATM called skimming! With ATM fraud on the rise in our community as well as nationwide, it is important to understand what skimming is, and how protect yourself.

What's the skinny on skimming?

Skimming isn’t new. In fact, the technique has been around for 20 years. In a nutshell, thieves install a device directly over the card reader of an ATM or at a gas pump to try and steal data and card information. Often a camera is also installed to try and record customers typing in their pin numbers. If successful, they can empty bank accounts.

How do I protect myself from skimming?

  • Look at the ATM to see if anything looks “off”. Does anything wiggle? Does the ATM/card reader look different since you used it last? See a red flag? Report it.
  • Review your transactions on a regular basis. Download the RVCU app to see transactions happening in real time. If you see activity in your account that looks questionable, call RVCU at (815) 282-0300.
  • Use the credit option when paying when at all possible. If you do use your pin, try to cover your hand. This makes it harder for thieves that may be watching through cameras close by.
  • Make sure that RVCU has your current contact information on file.
  • Going on vacay? Let RVCU know so we know it is you using your card in a different location. Do not let social media know! Yes, it may be tempting to post those sunset photos and those vacay fits, but for your security, wait.

Outsmart the bad guys and keep you safe? We're totally here for it!

Nothing is more important than the security of you, our members. RVCU has embraced added security measures including two way authentication and fraud alert notifications. If you suspect a skimming device has been installed on an RVCU ATM, please contact us immediately at (815) 282-0300.
